Student SupportWhile middle school has a strong academic focus as students get ready for high school, students are also undergoing many emotional changes as they grow into themselves. It is important that students feel safe and comfortable in their learning environment so they can focus on being academically successful. Throughout their years in middle school, students will continually grow and develop and the counseling department is dedicated to assisting them on their journey. The comprehensive counseling program provides the following programs to meet the needs of developing young adults:

Kickoff & New Student Welcome
Each fall, counselors and administrators take the time to welcome our new students. The transition to middle school is a huge step and many students need assistance in bridging the gap between elementary and middle school. The overall goal of the student welcome is to ensure that new students transition comfortably into their new environment.
Guidance Lessons
Throughout the year, the counselor will deliver lessons around academic skills, social development, high school readiness, and career readiness.
7th Grade Meetings
Ms. Guker will be scheduling individual meetings with each 7th grader. Parents will be invited; look for a letter in September. During this 30 minute meeting, we will review testing, attendance, academic, and discipline records. We will also discuss high school graduation and college entrance requirements, and outline a four-year plan for high school coursework.
High School Transition
Counseling for 8th grade students is focused on career exploration and high school transition. Ms. Guker will assist 8th graders in selecting a high school/academy, and provide guidance for high school course selection.
Assemblies
Assemblies bring together the entire school or a grade level in order to deliver information or discuss an issue on campus.
Support Counseling
The Counselor is available to help students who approach them with an issue that they would like to discuss more deeply. School counselors provide a safe place for students to work through an issue, and help stabilize a student emotionally in times of crisis. Orchard Park has one full-time counselor for grades K-8. All counseling is short term. If needed, referrals to outside resources can be provided.
